The Best Rifle Scope for Elk Hunting – What You Need to Know

With so many options for elk hunting rifle scopes, it can be easy to find yourself overwhelmed. While some believe that elk hunting scopes are the same as deer hunting scopes, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Why – because an ideal deer hunting scope is a short to mid-range scope. The best scopes for elk hunting, however, are ideally mid to high-range scopes.

When choosing the best elk hunting rifle scope for your needs, there are two primary factors to consider:

Durability: Durability refers to how well your scope will perform in a variety of weather conditions. When elk hunting, you want to choose a scope that is, ideally, water and fog proof.

Magnification/Power: Scope power for elk hunting refers to the magnification power of the scope. Since elk hunting requires mid to high-range scopes you want one that can be adjusted for shooting targets at a farther distance.

The ideal size scope for elk hunting doesn't necessarily refer to the scope's actual size. In fact, the size refers to the scope's lens size. Typically, an ideal lens size for elk hunting is 50 mm, as it offers a wider view range for shooting at farther distances. For shorter range targets, 24-40mm could also be sufficient.

Distance is a crucial factor that plays into choosing the best riflescope for elk hunting. Sure, it's possible to hit an elk at closer range. However, in most cases, you'll likely be shooting at a target that is farther away.

This means that you need a riflescope that is capable of a wide range of magnifications to help you hit your target. Mid to long-range shooting is typically defined as shooting a target that is 500+ yards away. This means that you need a riflescope that is capable of high magnification ranges. An ideal example would be the Match Pro 6-24x50 Riflescope, which is capable of a magnification power between 6x and 24x.
